 TC 16 - Wind Energy Support Structures


The wind energy is developing very strong. Up to now steel construction is used in the majority of units. The energy change to renewable energy will provide an increasing market during the coming decades. In recent time prestressed concrete towers partly substitute steel towers. 
The towers are a very special kind of structure with the following features: big height, big weight, high number. From the design perspective different areas of interest may be identified. These are stability (shells), connections (bolted, welded, grouted), fatigue (VHCF). There should be strong link to the existing TCs in ECCS addressing these topics for common kind of structures.. There are options for the use of high strength materials in hybrid (composite) structures as well. 
The issue of the TC 16 will be to support design, fabrication covering the existing gap between both and support code development. 
It is crutial to influence the code development on the European level. Up to now, wind energy standards are managed by IEC. This should rather be done by CEN and linked to the Eurocodes. TC 16´s activities should address onshore and offshore turbines as well. 
The sustainability aspect should be emphasized particularly because these structures are applied to improve the share of renewable energy in the energy supply of the next generations.
